Generative AI
Since the release of Dall-e 2 and Midjourney V3, I have been curious about Generative AI, specifically in its ability to remix culture and history. I spent hours going down the rabbit holes of popular Mexican stereotypes, as portrayed by the AI and blending these with familiar examples of pop culture from the last century. I have used the tools to “sketch” different tableaus, normalizing scenes of migration, class divide and global warming. Drawing from visual reference has always been a part of the creative process. The opportunity to create references in ai accelerates the prototyping process and superpowers our ability to imagine scenes, characters, objects, locations and iconography. Now tools exist to build entire conceptual worlds, at hyper-scale. As an artist who has both respect for authorship but also curiosity for innovation and cultural evolution, I am treading only on the lanes as currently allowed by the tool - whether independent or within the existing design mega complex.
In fact, I have moved the majority of these projects to a new site, to track the evolution of my projects using Generative AI, the technology’s influence on the work, while identifying benefits, efficiencies and limits. As an artist and designer still motivated to learn new behaviors and techniques, I am eager to see what comes next. Below is a preview.
